Chapter 12:
Study of three artists:
Cas Holmes:
She is a very famous artist. She works with different materials. She uses objects, which were recycled by her. I met her at a workshop in Irsee. She gave a course for recycling paper. It was fantastic to see the results after one week workshop. Her collections are exhibited in famous galleries and she has published a lot of articles about her art.

Lois Walpole:
She is also a very famous mixed media artist and she works also with waste materials. She is an artist making functional objects especially baskets in many kinds of forms and dispositions.
The surfaces are very decorative and colorfull. On the following link: "LoisWalpole.com" you can have a look on her work.
Her work has been discussed in many books and articles.

My artist is Tracy Bautista:
I like her combination of fabric and paper using sketching, doodeling, painting, printing, spraying to create richful surfaces. In her book "Collage Unleased" she shows also different binding technics.
All these three artists have a relationship to module 4.
To beware the cfopyright of the artists I did not use pictures on my blog.

By searching for artists I found an interesting website about "Carving Books into Art Sculpture Techniques".

Evaluation:

The completed embroidered assessment for module four is a booklet from origami envelopes-signatures- with cover based on the design of pictures  57 and 58.

How do I feel about the resulting conclusion?
I am content with the result. It was not so easy, because the techniques paper making and binding books was a very new experience for me.

Is it fit for purpose- give reasons?
I think it is o.K. because I hope I fullfilled  the asked duties.

If I am asked to make it again, what changes would I make to the way I designed it and the way I made it?
I used Procion for dying my fabrics. I am not content with the result of dying. It is too dark or washed-out. This problem I have not solved, I have no solution till now. The design increased during the work chapter by chapter.

The download of module was at the end of march 2013, I started with the work in October 2013, and now (025.02.2014) I have finished it.

The working time was 90 hours (without the time I needed for reading, preparing the fabrics, withdrawing the threads, making papers, to do the uploading on my blog and to make pictures.

To keep my work save I put all the stitchery works in tissue paper in a big paper box.

I observed the rules for health and safety carefully. I have always worn rubber gloves, masks and if it was possible or necessary I did the work outside the house in the fresh air.

Chapter 10, book, structures
Constructing books is new foreign profession for me. Last summer I did some book binding with friends. It shows that it is a big help for me now.

Picture 59:
This is a foto, which shows all my hand made different books.

.
Picture 60:
My first book is a simple book binding. The bags are kept together with a simple seam.  It is made from bread bags.

Picture 61:
This is a folded accordeon. Between two folds is one page added. The edges are stitched with different kind of  embroidery.

Picture 62 and 63:
This is a folded accordeon with pocketts and it has an open spin and can be closed with a cord. The front and the back site are made from cranched parcel paper. Painted with deluded procion. The folds are stitched even so the edges from the pocket with straight stitches.

Picture 64 and 65:
It is a flag book. The cover was made from egg boxes painted with green spray. Stemped with the letters "A" for the front and a "Z" for the back. The flags are made from transparent paper and  are stemped with the "ABC..." and so on.

Picture 66:
This is a folded one sheet book. The folds are stitched with zigzag stitches to get pockets.

Picture 67:
This picture is a a folded tea bag book.

After all these different examples I have decided something to do for my special book structure related to media, which is characterized by zigzag, to and fro.

Picture 68, 69, 70 and 71:
These are the beginning for the origami envelopes. I have taken non-woven wallcoverings. This paper is crumpled.  Then I  ironed the paper with iron transfer paints. Therefore I painted several copy paper with these paints.

I cut this paper to the desired measure and folded it in envelopes and stitched it with seed stitches by hand.

Pictures 72:
The paper to make my pulp for the cover  sheet and my tool for rubbing with oil paint sticks. After rubbing I wash it with deluded paint. This proceedure I repeated several times very carefully, until I was content with the result.

Picture 73:
This is the result  folded in the correct size and ready for stitching related to my previous examples.

Picture 74:
If I consider, than I draw the stitches on a sheet of transparent paper and place this on my work. So I get an impression how it could be.

These fotos show my result of module four.

This is my video for more presentation and also for the authenticity of my work.

Picture 80:
This is the presentations picture for completing my assesment piece. The most yarns are from  Anne Lange and some from Steff Francis. You can see all the things for the portfolio book construction. The cover was made from waste paper bags. It makes a very soft and fine paper. The relief was done by rubbing tool, oil paint sticks, colorwash, iron  and this act was repeated several times.
